Box Office Opens for Cape Town Fringe Festival 2016

A feast of fresh new theatre, comedy, dance and more will captivate the Mother City when the Cape Town Fringe opens on 22 September 2016 and bookings are now open at www.capetownfringe.co.za
Running until 8 October 2016, the third annual Cape Town Fringe Festival has a programme jammed with engaging performances by international and local acts, including the highly acclaimed Police Cops, a comedy piece from the UK, and the national debut of a South African adaption of the hit children’s theatre show, The Gruffalo. Numerous family shows will be on offer throughout the Western Cape school holidays and, as was the case last year, patrons are advised to book early before the “Sold Out” signs go up.
Tickets range from R40 – R100 encouraging those new to theatre to experiment and see more than one production. The low cost of tickets and extended programme run also means that theatre and music lovers can dine out on their choice of nearly 80 shows. There are further concessions for students and pensioners as well as a series of box office specials like half-price Mondays.
The hub of the Cape Town Fringe is the Cape Town City Hall where the fresh Fringe Club will have a line-up of free events and performances. Other venues include the Alexander Bar, the Makukhanye Arts Room in Khayelitsha, Langa’s Theatre in the Backyard and Guga S’Thebe as well as Observatory’s new AFDA Theatre.
The inaugural Cape Town Buskers’ Festival, in partnership with the V&A Waterfront, forms part of the Cape Town Fringe and sees free, outdoor sessions at the V&A Waterfront from 6-9 October, from an array of international and local public street performers, including Canada’s ‘Dynamike’ who has travelled to dozens of Festivals around the world and is regarded as one of the top performers globally.
Says Cape Town Fringe CEO, Tony Lankester, “The Cape Town Fringe brings a host of productions to the city that could only be seen at the Cape Town Fringe, collaborations between artists like Maya Spector and Asanda Mqiki – who met at last year’s Fringe, a host of Standard Bank Ovation Award winners from the National Arts Festival and some exciting, new and edgy theatre from Cape Town and beyond.”
The Cape Town Fringe is also an important space for artist development. Says Lankester, “The low cost of staging means that there is also a low barrier to entry for artists and less risk. The Fringe provides the space, does the marketing and manages the bookings and door so the artists can just concentrate on making theatre.”
